How to read poker tournament results with ROI, ITM, and finish place

Tournament poker is high variance, so one win or one bust says little. ROI, ITM rate, average finish, field size, buy-in tier, and chip trend make the long-term picture easier to read.

  • Calculate ROI from total invested, re-entries included
  • Review ITM rate and average finish by buy-in tier
  • Keep chip trend and blind levels next to results

The minimum numbers for tournament results

Record entry fee, re-entries, total invested, finish place, field size, prize, and net result every time. Without those, ROI and ITM rate are hard to trust.

  • ROI = (prizes - total invested) divided by total invested
  • ITM rate = cashes divided by entries
  • Average finish should be read with field size

Do not read tournaments like cash sessions

Tournament samples swing hard. Keep them separate from cash hourly rate and location results until you have enough entries to read the trend.

Chip trend explains the result

Cashing alone does not explain where the tournament turned. Level, SB/BB/ante, and stack in big blinds connect the result to the decisions you made.
